Date Completed: September 2015
Purpose: Baby quilt for my aunt’s first child
Favorite Detail: I hand-drew the whale and water spouts to raw-edge applique.
Lesson for the log book: I thought I didn’t need a pattern to piece HSTs. I was wrong. I underestimated how much width I’d lose to seams and trimming. The finished quilt ended up smaller than planned, and I had to scrap my original idea of using two whales as focal points — there just wasn’t space on the top once it came together.
Do the math – every seam loses half an inch, and then the HSTs have to be trimmed!
