đź‘‹ Ahoy! I’m Melanie

A smiling woman sits beside a colorful quilt displaying a large pink hibiscus flower, surrounded by various other quilts in a quilt show at a church.

Here, I hope to provide a safe harbor to try new things. So let’s get quilting!

âš“ My Journey

I finished my first quilt at 9, learning from my Grandma on an antique Pfaff. In the early 2000s, I completed a small nine-patch lap quilt, pieced and straight-line quilted all by myself. Growing up surrounded by a lineage of talented quilters—Grandma, Granny, and Aunt Sharon—instilled in me a deep respect for the craft.

It wasn’t long before I asked Grandma for a book (my other passion), which had butterfly appliquĂ© patterns. I remember her trying to help me pick fabrics with colors appropriate for butterflies, but all I could grasp was “butterfly fabric,” which is how the borders, backing, and bright yellow background were picked. But I was only a couple years into this hobby.

While I was learning, I never thought that I couldn’t do something or that my work wasn’t good enough. That is likely a child-like approach to a new skill. But I was a child. And I encourage us all to approach new skills with this same child-like courage.

🌟 My North Star

I launched The Stitched Helm to document my progress. My goals are simple:

  • Inspire fellow quilters to try new techniques without fearing imperfection
  • Share honest, “behind‑the‑scenes” looks through the journey
  • Cultivate a supportive community where questions and comments are welcomed
